Grace Guan is co-founder of Unlonely, a web3 live-streaming platform to turn lonely viewers into an engaged community through gamified onchain features. She has degrees from U Penn and LBS. She spent five years at Google and YouTube in operations and content partnerships and then left to join the world of web3. She worked at Common Protocol, Fabric Ventures, and Bright Moments before starting Unlonely with her younger brother.

In the third episode of Still Here, Alexander Guy chats with Grace Guan about her journey from YouTube to building Unlonely with her brother, how crypto leads to better content, and the huge success of the debut onchain show, Love on Leverage.

Grace told her how her experience of working at Google shaped her views on the industry.

“One issue that is driving bad incentives in Web 2 platforms is advertising. These platforms make money from ads. That’s also the way creators make money. But the reason why you have to have millions of people view your content is because of ad conversion rate. Advertisers are willing to pay for bigger views, targeting certain demographics,” said Grace.

As a result, creators and users are just there to be leveraged.

In web3, you can have a much more tight community and monetize it.

“You can just be you, focused on the very specific area of the world that you are interested in. Just do that rather than having to appear to 100 million teenagers,” Grace pointed out.

This can involve something as fun as Love on Leverage.
